I'm not American, but isn't The Republican Party the exact opposite of "quirky and unique"?
I mean due to lack of ranked choice voting in most jurisdictions, it means that anything other than the two dominant parties is unusual. Which means the likes of the Libertarian party, the Greens, Deez Nutz etc?
While it is not unimaginable that the Republican party could be changed to be more alturistic from within. But anyone joining would have to be incredibly naive to believe that they'd actually be able to change the culture from one that is primarily based on the domination of others and getting rich, to actually caring deeply about other people's needs.
Yes the gop can be changed from within, in fact it has been a 40 year old project to make the gop more racist/white nationalist/extremist and they are now finally successful in this. That the EA people think they can swoop in an reverse the course of this change of a 40 year old project is a bit silly.
(A few historians have written about how saying stuff which the gop says now used to get people kicked out and not embraced like now, and personally I think this is the problem with the geriatrics in the democratic party, they havent realized this, they gop (which also sucked imho) they grew up with is no more).
I assumed it was more implied, so the steelmanning readers could think that is what they mean. Join the gop on the low level so you can turn all their bad policies around. (but not realizing that there is a large group doing just that right now but the other direction (esp as all this shit is connected in a dumb way, racists often also don't believe in climate change (or just blame africans/asians))).
Biden isn’t even left wing though. 58%? God that’s embarrassing. Hard to blame boomers when 42% of my generation was on board with another round of dump
But for those effective altruists who are pretty sure the Democratic
Party is way better, perhaps those championing open borders or stricter
animal welfare laws, or those who think international cooperation via
the United Nations is really amazing
Ah yes, those well-known central planks of the Democratic policy
platform
I think joining the Republican Party in such a movement would make a
lot of people nervous- about their social standing, attractiveness to
funders, and also that icky feeling you get when you’re doing something
all your friends think is so uncool.
It’s almost Patrick-Bateman-esque, the way it doesn’t occur to him
that maybe people would feel bad about doing a terrible, harmful thing
because it’s, you know, a terrible, harmful thing to do.
I was shocked that you actually just used the title of the post.
And did the poster here forget that there is a wider world outside of
the USA? This will not make EA popular with their target market (highly
educated people with disposable income) who isn’t in the USA.
Anyway, good luck with the ‘let leopards eat peoples faces party’ EA,
that will not go wrong at all.
I guess it is a small point in favor of the community that someone
had to ask if this was a parody or not (it was not).
No joke, this type of person would support Hitler because he was a
vegetarian, built some good roads, and was seemed cooler than those
boring social democrats. And you might get a career boost out of it!
No, they wouldn’t. This type of person would run on asking whether we really need so many Jewish people around to loan out credit. You’re reading it as if it’s not at all self-aware about what it is, rather than just unaware of how far it’s fallen for its own chirpy bullshit.
The majority position of EA members on that thread seems to be
closest to:
We should be careful about claiming the GOP is the “worse party”.
Worse for whom? Maybe they are doing things you don’t like, but half the
country thinks the Democrats are the worse party. We should be wise to
the state of normative uncertainty we are in. Neither party is really
worse except by some measure, and because of how they are structured
against each other one party being worse means the other is better by
that measure.
A truly amazing example of rationalist brain in action - one party is
worse for EA goals on literally every issue they say they care about,
from global warming to pandemic prevention to foreign aid to the
regulation of potentially harmful technologies, but it’s close-minded
and partisan to point that out, so we all have to pretend to see the
Emperor’s new clothes.
>Neither party is really worse except by some measure, and because of how they are structured against each other one party being worse means the other is better by that measure.
why do these people take so long to say nothing
> but half the country thinks the Democrats are the worse party.
Ah yes the very rational argument that if a lot of people believe something then it's very likely that they're right
While I don’t want to suggest that you or any other person who feels
the GOP has an obligation to work for them, part of the reason they are
able to be hostile to various groups is because those groups are not
part of how they get elected.
The common and effective electoral strategy of voting for the people
you most disagree with.
58% is not an enormous proportion of millenials in a two party
system, and what’s the proportion of non-voters or voters for
third-party candidates out of the full 100%?
New suggestion, since we’re clearly playing the long game here, if
you want to be quirky and unique: be from another country! Americans
make up a huge majority of people who speak English as a first language!
Real cool kids should consider entryism as a fifth column for some
Australian Trostskyist party’s America campaign.
someone should post them the list of political issues and how both
parties have voted on
em,https://np.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/6pc5qu/democrats_propose_rules_to_break_up_broadband/dkon8t4/
clearly that should be enough to demonstrate how one is more altruistic
than the other. i am curious how they would spin it to stay on course
with their sociopathic political agenda, rationalism and effective
altruism be damned.
I like that this just totally ignores the idea that anyone might be
an identity that the Republican party and its supporters might have some
issues electing into office. Although, in the writer’s defense, assuming
that everyone reading the Effective Altruism forums is a straight,
white, cis male is probably a fair assumption most of the time.
Is this guy forgetting you basically have to sell your soul to win as
a Republican and in doing so you’d probably became what you hate? Or is
this person just that sociopathic (and selfless) they would have no
problem pretending to be a Republican for years just to heel turn at the
height of the power (and immediately get voted out)

This is extremely dumb, crypto-ing just doesn’t work and that person should know it.
I would urge this effective altruist to also think on the margin and abandon EA altogether in order to better preach its values among normal people.

this is so fucking stupid

Democrats are ineffective and barely altruistic
Republicans are very effective but obligate nonaltruists
