Lead me to the following posts with a few gem comments extracted:

EA/rationalism and redpill fit like yin and yang. Akin to how EA is an optimization of altruism with ‘suboptimal’ human tendencies like morality and empathy stripped from it, red pill is an optimized sexual strategy with the humanity of women stripped from it.

EA appeals to exactly that kind of really-smart-person who is perfectly capable of convincing themselves that they’re always right about everything. And from there, you can justify all kinds of terrible things.

I came to the same conclusion after a group of my friends got involved with the local rationalist and EA community, though for a different reason: Their drug habits.

They believed themselves to have a better grasp on human nature and behavior than the average person, and therefore believed they were better at controlling themselves. They also had a deep contrarian bias, which turned into a belief that drugs weren’t actually as bad as the system wanted us to believe.

Combine these two factors and they convinced themselves that they could harness recreational opioid use to improve their lives, but avoid the negative consequences that “normies” suffered by doing it wrong. I remember being at a party where several of them were explaining that they were on opioids right now and tried to use the fact that nothing terrible was happening as proof that they were performing rational drug use.

Long story short, the realities of recreational opioid use caught up with them and they were blind to the warning signs due to their hubris. I intentionally drifted away from that group around that time, so I don’t know what happened to them.

I will never forget how confident they were that addiction is something that only happens to other people, not rationalists like them.”

What the goddamn fuck. I’ve got nothing against doing drugs if that’s your thing, but how much of a goddamn moron do you have to be to think “I’ve got a special drug strategy that will make them safe” and start with opiates. You’d think that a movement that prides itself on the broad application of scientific rigor would at least know not to start with the most extreme and high-risk version of what they were testing.

It's an attitude that has gotten a lot of people addicted. Ironically, if rationalists had talked to actual real life addicts, instead of deriving a foolproof plan to shoot heroin from first principles, they'd know just how far that mindset gets people and would stop before they ruin their lives.
That would require them to admit normies had anything valuable to say at all. I think they'd rather die of an overdose.
> how much of a goddamn moron do you have to be to think "I've got a special drug strategy that will make them safe" and start with opiates. the rationalists have already been doing this low-dosing* street meth as an adderall substitute now you might think this is also dumb as shit, but consider: it is . ^(* i'm sure they're absoltutely consistent in this and totally don't just speed off their nuts)
You know, that sounds like the perfect entry point for my "*Breaking Bad*, but everyone is terminally online" TV show pitch.
hmm looking at the endless blog posts in a new light now
Makes sense, *Limitless* was a documentary.
Stim abuse honestly seems rife in the scene.
starting pistol was when Scoot posted that adderall gave you financial superpowers
Oh no

I’m mad.
Ah, yet another point where rationalists accidentally (?) recreate nazi germany.

Look, I’m the first to say that the drug war narratives are full of propoganda, but fucking opioids???

There's an entire set of people who seem to take "A lot of the drug wars narrative were exaggerated and there may be some therapeutic use cases for some types of drugs that are proscribed and this research has been hampered by their proscription" to mean "No drugs will cause any problem and they will also cure cancer."

Combine these two factors and they convinced themselves that they could harness recreational opioid use to improve their lives, but avoid the negative consequences that “normies” suffered by doing it wrong.

the racism and classism baked into this is chef’s fucking kiss

this is the default mindset of almost every middle class and up beginning opiate user
Yeah reminds me of the ['I'm a superiour Rationalist so I went to a Scientology course, because I'm smart enough to not get dragged into a cult, and here is what we could learn from them'](https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/qwdupkFd6kmeZHYXy/build-small-skills-in-the-right-order) post. Same sort of behavior, where they think they will not be affected.
From one cult to another, certain that he is impervious to both.
It's a common saying among grifters that the easiest person to fool is the one who thinks they can never be fooled.
I was surprised to see that somebody was being very reasonable in the comments until I saw that it was David lol

I miss this old version of the internet where you could find crazy fun interesting stuff like this.
It's like they're playing chicken with their minds.
This can be achieved in drama school without joining a cult
Yes, totally. But that doesnt have that 'seeker of secret knowledge' edge.
True that!

poppy maximisers

They call that nootropics stack "The Afghan"

That HN post is one of my favorites. It’s just on another level. It captures the rationalist mindset perfectly.

Lieter would know about toxic cultures for women but okay.

I thought this quote was very astute.

Akin to how EA is an optimization of altruism with “suboptimal” human tendencies like morality and empathy stripped from it, red pill is an optimized sexual strategy with the humanity of women stripped from it.

Even beyond the way EA men treat women, the diagnosis of EA as “altruism with … human tendencies like morality and empathy stripped from it” is extremely insightful. And it helped me understand what bothers me so much about that community, i.e., why has a community devoted to charitable giving become such a comfortable home for sociopaths?

It really is a short summary of one of the main absurdities of the idea. And it results in attracting sociopaths that want to handle large sums of money with little morality and empathy. It also made me realize that to sociopaths altruism is just virtue signaling. They cannot conceive of doing something out of the desire to make another happy. Everything is about appearances.

Is any of this new/unknown from the stuff that came out like a month ago?
