Him and Greg Egan have specifically made fun of MIRI and there's the early dismissal from Stephenson with his "Rapture of the Nerds" comment. Most good SF writers find these guys contemptable.
So it was Neal Stephenson, back in the early days of the singularity/hard takeoff discussions (Kurtzweil/Drexler days) and someone asked if he (Neal) believed it was a possibility. His response was that it was pre millennial dispensationism for a different crowd, that is it was theology, not science. The pull quote was 'its the rapture of the nerds, where rapture refers to a semi-fringe version of Christian eschatology where the Elect are removed bodily from earth on Judgement.day.
Yud accidentally starting a butlerian jihad would be funny (doubly so
because that is also what Jehanne Butler
did iirc)
E: looked it up, thankfully Bruce has called AI like the tulip craze
of old. So he isnt on the side of the agi will kill us all, nuclear war
now. Jihad cancelled
It is *sure as hell* sarcastic. Bruce does sarcasm like no other. And he's been consistently ahead of the futurology game since the late 1980s.
(Me, I'm just sitting on the sidelines honing a novel mocking the whole longtermist/singularity/mind uploading thing. I'm too verbose/not smart enough to fit it in a tweet.)
Good, every now and then a person who you used to look up to, but didn't keep a close eye on recently has some sort of fallout/brainfart and turns weird, that is why I was worried.
I mean, this is the Platonic Sneer from a guy that Yud probably holds in pretty high regard, so I’m feeling pretty good about this.
Not sure if this is sarcastic or not.
