Honestly, by the standards of fanfiction writers, EY is probably in the top half. There's a lot of very bad writing out there, and you can just not read it. If he wants to write the weirdo EY version of The Last Airbender or Percy Jackson instead of trying to influence policy, let him.

I mean, it's legible and does have a plot that makes sense. That puts it in the top quartile of fan fiction, really. I don't judge anything above or below that bar, it's mostly hobbyists having fun and it's mean to put it to that scrutiny. In EY's case, though, he has pretensions of being, like, an actual author, so it's reasonable to judge by those standards.
This is analogous to saying ‘by the standards of a wheelchair bound 80 year old, I run a lightning fast 5k’, in that it says a lot more about the quality of the average work of fan fiction than it does about Yud’s mad literary skillz
It doesn't mean much to say Yud's HPMOR is in the top half of fanfiction, because readers mostly ignore the bottom half, at least in fandoms with a lot of fanfiction.
"Yes Senator our fear is that tech companies left unchecked are currently developing AI as Lawful Neutral and we really want to move toward Chaotic Good at a minimum"
Right now we fear AI might become a Gryffindor, or slightly less bad a Slytherin, with your help, dear senator, we could turn it into a Hufflepuff or, shining light of consciousness willing, a Ravenclaw.
and i mean isn't it the whole point of d&d alignments that they're a loose descriptive basis for how you play and develop your character rather than the dm screaming at you "your character is chaotic neutral but killing this npc would be lawful evil so i won't let you"

Checking the MIRI research page… 2017…
Overall his publication rate is about as productive as decent grad student or a mediocre PostDoc… except they have actual peer review to go through, which can be a major speed bump.
Idk about everyone else but I would actually prefer if he just stuck
to writing his own weird brand of sci-fi. I got a lot of rat friends and
what he does outside of writing fiction is bad for peoples mental
health.
quick, everybody stop trying to solve alignment! we have to keep him from writing more fiction!
Just ask ChatGPT to solve the AI alignment problem
and also write the rationalist fiction
the singularity won’t come for us all, but you can take advantage Yud
Pause Giant AI
ExperimentsAlignment: An Open Letterbut he ALREADY writes fiction
dude just write your fic if you want to
Is that a threat?
both Dark Lord’s Answer fans toss their, er, hats into the air
The big problem with “alignment” is that he’s the only one speaking about it in that terms because he’s fundamentally wrong about it.
When was the last time he published something on AI alignment?
Now that’s the Yud we know and “love”
